Want to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and prolong life? Often you will receive advice on eating plant-based diets, but a study published in the journal The Lancet Regional Health – Europe shows that highly processed plant-based foods may lead to higher risk of cardiovascular disease than plant-based foods with lower processing levels. Therefore, even if meat is not included, you should still choose the plant-based food types you eat.

What is the difference between plant-based and animal-based super-processed foods?

Plant-based super-processed foods are entirely or mainly composed of plant sources, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, breads, cakes and candies, sugary drinks, and animal-based super-processed foods include all meats (fish, poultry, red meat, etc.), dairy products and chicken eggs.

In this report, the researchers used more than 118,000 adults between the ages of 40 and 69 to answer data on dietary problems, which later contacted hospitals and death records of cardiovascular risk factor development.
