After NVIDIA announced that the H20 chips were approved by the Chinese government for sales of H20 chips, AMD also confirmed to follow up and restore the MI308 chips shipped in China. Foreign media Tom's Hardware pointed out that AMD has certified that export application will enter the review process and will eventually be approved.
AMD stated that the U.S. Department of Commerce has recently notified the application for MI308 chip export permits to be reviewed and plans to resume shipping after approval. The company issued a statement mentioning that it praised the Trump administration's progress in promoting trade debates and its commitment to the leadership of the United States' AI.
AMD, like NVIDIA, is dissatisfied with the government's export restrictions on AI chips. At that time, AMD pointed out that these restrictions could cause the company to lose about $800 million in inventory, purchase commitments and related preparation losses. Although it is not as big as the $5.5 billion lost by NVIDIA, it is undoubtedly a heavy blow to AMD's financial situation.
With the cancellation of the H20 and MI308 chip ban, the government has made a major shift in its export policy on AI chips. NVIDIA has repeatedly emphasized that export restrictions may weaken the US's influence in the AI field and force China to turn to independent innovation and alternative hardware, which may instead help China develop.
Recently, Huang Renshi also downplayed the doubt that the Chinese military might use US AI technology, saying, "Just like we hope the world is built on the US dollar and take US dollars as the global standard, we also hope that the US technology structure can become a global standard." He reiterated that if the US wants to maintain its AI leadership position, it must ensure that the US technology structure can reach the global market.
