The Sun reported that a low-level English league player ran to the home court of other teams to participate in the game for a 7-hour drive, which was nearly 200 miles (about 300 kilometers).
Spalding defender Lewis White drove to the wrong venue to compete in the Southern Football League Central Super League match against Bailey City. White was traveling away from his home in Leicestershire to Bailey City, which is located in Bailey St. Edmonds Town, Suffolk. But upon reaching what he thought was home to Bury Town, White realized he actually drove to the Gigg Lane Stadium in Greater Manchester.
This incredible mistake means that the 24-year-old was forced to turn around and drive along the A14 for three hours to head to home court at Pele City. White reportedly drove for seven hours in total due to this mistake.
He played as a defensive substitute in the late game, helping Spalding hold a 2-1 lead with one less.
Spalding coach Jimmy Dean said after the game: "I actually asked the people over Bailey if this happened before, and they said no. He must have been immersed in his own world at the time, but he came and helped us hold on to the victory, winning mid-week is always a wonderful feeling."
When asked to comment on this, a club spokesman told the Guardian: "We just want to focus on preparing for a big game on the weekend."
Fortunately, White shouldn't get the wrong place before the third round of the FA Cup qualifiers against Dargenham and Redbridge this weekend. However, he would better review his geography as soon as possible, as there is a match against St Ives, located in Cambridgeshire, in the upcoming schedule. If the defender drives all the way to Cornwall and finds the wrong St Ives, he will waste more gas.
